About Stafford

Stafford is a village in northern Queensland, Australia, in the Region of Brisbane.

Stafford is predominantly an urban suburb of a quarter acre block of buildings built around the 1940s and 1950. This includes original Queenslander-style homes and an important post-war Queensland Housing Commission.

Stafford is situated on the banks of Kedron Brook, west of Lutwyche Lane.

Many of the residents of Stafford are elderly, but there are more younger families.

History of Stafford

The original name of Stafford was Happy Valley.

Staffordshire Regiment was Sir Thomas Brisbane after whom the town is named-a Stafford Knot occurs in the town`s arms race.

A collective campaign to change the town in 1885 and 1886 led to its present name resembling the English county of Staffordshire.

Stafford was serviced by electric trams operated by the Brisbane City Council from 1940 to 1968. It was the last fully new tramway line constructed in Brisbane (as distinct from the tram line extension).
