The suburb is about 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) west of the General Post Office in Brisbane. It is bordered by Hale Street to the west and Countess Street to the east.
Musgrave Street is its northern border and Milton Street is its southern limit.
The suburb takes its name from the founder of the Petrie family, Andrew Petrie.
In August 1865, 31 town lots surrounding Petrie Terrace were sold by the Queensland Government.
In December 1865, Petrie Terrace's former "Lincoln Estate" was auctioned by Arthur Martin & Co. It was originally divisioned 579, 580, 581, 597, 596 and 595 in Enoggera Parish, Stanley District.
Baroona Hall at 15-17 Caxton Road, Petrie Terrace, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia is a heritage-listed civic building.
It was planned by Richard Gailey, and was constructed by James Stuart Martin between 1883 and 1884.
It's sometimes referred to as Caxton Street House, Josephson's Clothing Company, and United Brothers Lodge. On 21 October 1992 it was transferred to the Queensland Heritage Register.
