About Newmarket

Newmarket is a suburb in the inner north-west of Brisbane, Queensland , Australia.

It is an older, residential suburb with homes from the pre-war and post-war periods. It Includes many fine examples of home Queenslander style.

Few medium density townhouses and clusters of units have also emerged in the last few years. Newmarket had a population of 4,979 at the 2016 census.

History of Newmarket

Because of its distance from the area, Newmarket was initially known as "The Three Mile Scrub,".

As Brisbane began to develop north along Kelvin Grove Road, it was agreed in 1880 to move the livestock saleyards of Brisbane from Normanby to an outer site, the field now bordering Enoggera Lane, Newmarket Road, Wilston Road and Alderson Route. Given the suburb 's name, this region was known as the "fresh town."
