About New Farm

New Farm is a suburb of Brisbane City, Queensland, Australia `s inner northern riverside. New Farm had a population of 12,542 people according to its 2016 census.

The suburb is situated on a wide bend of the Brisbane River 2 kilometers east of the CBD at Brisbane. New Farm is partially surrounded by the Brisbane River, with entry from the northwest via the Fortitude Valley and from the north via Newstead.

Merthyr is a community under New Farm; it was a distinct community until 1975.

History of New Farm

Though one of Brisbane `s oldest suburbs, Brisbane `s indigenous Turrbal tribe is once called the New Farm Peninsula Binkinba (place of the land tortoises).

The suburb was originally an agricultural area, which its name came from.

In 1827, Commandant Patrick Logan set up a new farm in the town as part of the penal colony of Moreton Bay. The place was once a convict worksite.

Tourist attraction in New Farm

New Farm Park, located at137 Sydney Lane, New Farm, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia is a heritage-listed riverfront public park.

It was planned by Albert Herbert Foster and constructed by Gladwin Legge & Co from 1914 through 1950.

On 7 February 2005, it was transferred to the Queensland Heritage Register.
