Hamilton, known for being an "old wealth", was the home to many aristocrats and clergy. The suburb took its name from the Hamilton Hotel.
Gustavus Hamilton is the one who built the first hotel in the district. Mrs. Warren, one of the earlier lessees of the hotel married another Mr. Hamilton which made the hotel occupied by different families of the name Hamilton. Later on the name of the Hamilton Hotel was gradually applied to the whole district.
Hamilton has several heritage-listed sites including Toorak House, Lochiel, Marie Ville/Eltham, El Nido, and Woollahra.
