About Fortitude Valley

Fortitude Valley, also known as The Valley, is an inner suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It lies in the northeast of the Brisbane central business district.

History of Fortitude Valley

In 1849, Scottish immigrants from the ship SS Fortitude arrived on the promise of free land grants in Brisbane, enticed by Rev Dr John Dunmore Lang. The free land was denied so the immigrants set up camp in York`s Hollow waterholes in an area now enclosed by Victoria Park. A number of the immigrants moved on and settled the suburb which was named after the ship.

It was in the 1980s and 1990s when the suburb experienced an urban renaissance.
